ANDREA (D'ANDREA), JACOB. - German Protestant theologian, b. at Weiblingen on 15 March 1528, d. at Tübingen on 7 Jan. 1590. His schoolmates gave him the name "Schmiding" or "Fabricius," from his father's trade, for he was a blacksmith; but when he enrolled at the University of Tübingen, he changed it to that of J. d'A. It may be said that his whole life, a very eventful one, was an uninterrupted labor to propagate everywhere and to defend against every adversary the Lutheran doctrines and to bring order, peace and concord into the affairs of his sect and into the controversies with the other sects, which he would have liked to unify. With certain Lutheran theologians, in fact, he drew up a "Formula of Concord," accompanied by an Epitome and a Solida declaratio. The formula in 1580 was added to the collection of the various Lutheran symbols and appeared on 15 June under the name Book of Concord. But it did not achieve its purpose, because the struggles and discussions among the various sects continued as fierce as before.
He left more than one hundred and fifty writings, besides an abundant correspondence; but they did not exercise a notable effectiveness; one may recall: De duobus naturis in Christo (1565), and Bericht von der Ubiquität (1589), in which he tenaciously defends the Lutheran theory of the ubiquity of the body of Christ.
