ANDERDON, WILLIAM HENRY. - English Jesuit and writer, b. in London on 22 Dec. 1816, d. at Roehampton on 28 July 1890. Of a Protestant family, after his studies at Oxford he was elected parish priest of St. Margaret's at Leicester (1846-50). Having abjured heresy in Paris at the hands of the celebrated Fr. De Ravignan and been ordained a Catholic priest in 1853, he was first a professor at the University of Dublin and then private secretary to his uncle Cardinal Manning. In 1872 he entered the Jesuits and soon distinguished himself as a preacher and controversialist, as he had earlier made a name for himself by his limpid and attractive narrative style.
