ANDRONIKOS III PALAIOLOGOS, Emperor of Byzantium. - The second son of Michael IX, who was the son and co-regent of Andronicus II, he remained the presumed heir of his grandfather when his father died in 1320. The loose morals of the young A. soon brought about a serious quarrel with the old Andronicus II, who thought of disinheriting his grandson. A group of malcontents against the old emperor, led by John Cantacuzenus, took part in the dispute, and civil war soon broke out, ending with the abdication of Andronicus II. But the new emperor (1328-41) abandoned the government to Cantacuzenus, who began to prepare his own accession to the throne, despite the opposition of the empress Anna of Savoy. The internal Byzantine crisis favored the growth of the power of the Serbs, led by Stephen Dušan (1331-1355), while the Ottomans seized the principal Byzantine cities of Asia, reaching the coasts of the Sea of Marmara and threatening Thrace and Constantinople.
