ANDRONICO OF RHODES. - Peripatetic philosopher of the 1st century B.C., tenth head of the Lyceum. His name is linked to the edition of Aristotle's school works, from which the collection we possess substantially descends. For it A. was able to make use of the Master's own library, which, inherited by Theophrastus, and by him passed to Neleus of Scepsis (Troad), and finally sold to Apellicon, an officer of Mithridates, fell in 86 into the hands of Sulla, who transported it to Rome. Refuted by modern philology is the legend according to which before A.'s edition the school works of the Stagirite were unknown. Copies of those works were, as appears from various testimonies, in the library of Alexandria, nor could the Lyceum have been without them. Since the manuscripts brought by Sulla to Rome were very probably those of Aristotle himself, even if not all in his own hand, A.'s work must have been one of collation and critical revision. Besides the edition of Aristotle he also edited that of Theophrastus. Of the one and the other he composed the indexes of the works, which have come down to us only in part. We possess no work of A. A De affectibus and a paraphrase of the Nicomachean Ethics have been falsely attributed to him by tradition.
