ANDROUTSOS, CHRISTOS. - Greek philosopher and theologian, b. at Kios in Bithynia in 1869, d. in 1937. Professor of dogmatic theology and moral theology at the University of Athens from 1912 to 1918 and from 1925 until his death, A. published some twenty works and pamphlets on philosophical, apologetic, dogmatic, and moral subjects.
The principal ones may be cited: Evil in Plato (Τὸ κακὸν παρὰ Πλάτωνι, 2 vols., Athens-Constantinople 1896-97); Plato's Theory of Knowledge ('Η τοῦ Πλάτωνος θεωρία τῆς γνώσεως, Athens 1902); Manual of Symbolics (Δοκίμιον Συμβολικῆς, 1st ed., Athens 1901; enlarged 2nd ed., Athens 1930), in which the author examines the doctrinal divergences among the various Christian confessions; Dogmatics of the Eastern Orthodox Church (Δογματικὴ τῆς ὀρθοδόξου ἀνατολικῆς Ἐκκλησίας, Athens 1907), which is the only complete manual of dogmatics published by a Greek since 1833; on several points the author appears to be under the influence of Protestant theology, contests many Catholic dogmas which, moreover, he does not know well, and generally maintains the theses of the ancient anti-Latin polemic; finally, A. wrote a System of Ethics (Σύστημα ἠθικῆς, Athens 1925).
