AMPHITRITE. - Greek sea deity. The name must be the same as that of other marine beings in which the element trit appears: the etymologies from Greek ("current," "mobile") are not very satisfactory, so some consider A. a pre-Hellenic deity, perhaps Minoan. She is not mentioned in the Iliad, but rather in the Odyssey, where she is little characterized. Hesiod makes her a Nereid, spouse of Poseidon and mother of Triton and of Rhode. Poseidon is said to have abducted her at Naxos or, according to another version, A., having fled to the bottom of the sea, was brought back to Poseidon by a dolphin. To Theseus she is said to have given a golden crown, which helped him escape from the labyrinth. According to other late sources A. would be an Oceanid. She was worshiped at Tenos, at Mykonos and on the Isthmus of Corinth, but always together with Poseidon. She was depicted on a chariot drawn by marine animals.
