ANFOSSI, FILIPPO. - Italian theologian, born in Taggia (near San Remo), died in Rome on 14 May 1825. He was a Dominican friar and carried out intense activity in defense of the rights of the Roman Church against Gallicanism. Pius VII, after his return to his States in 1814, appointed him vicar general of the Order, and the following year master of the Sacred Palace, a position that Anfossi held until his death. In this capacity, he advised Lamennais on the corrections to be introduced into his *Essai sur l'indifférence* (1821-23).
He published several works. Among the most notable are: *Difesa della Bolla "Auctorem fidei"* (Rome 1810); *La ragione e la fede in collera con F(r). (Carrega) per la sua dissertazione sulla legge del divorzio* (ibid. 1814); *L'uomo politico-religioso* (ibid. 1822); *La vendita dei beni ecclesiastici* (ibid. 1824).
