ANFOSSI, FILIPPO. - Italian theologian, b. at Taggia (near San Remo), d. at Rome on 14 May 1825. He was a Dominican religious and displayed intense activity in defense of the rights of the Roman Church against Gallicanism. Pius VII, after his return to his States, in 1814 appointed him vicar general of the Order, and the following year Master of the Sacred Palace, an office that A. held until his death. In that capacity he pointed out to Lamennais the corrections to be introduced into his Essai sur l'indifférence (1821-23).
He published several works. Among the principal ones, mention is deserved by: Difesa della Bolla «Auctorum fidei» (Rome 1810); La ragione e la fede in collera con F(r). (Carrega) per la sua dissertazione sulla legge del divorzio (ibid. 1814); L'uomo politico-religioso (ibid. 1822); La vendita dei beni ecclesiastici (ibid. 1824).
