ANFOSSI, FILIPPO. - Italian theologian, born at Taggia (near San Remo), died in Rome on 14 May 1825. He was a Dominican religious and carried on vigorous activity in defence of the rights of the Roman Church against Gallicanism. After his return to his States, Pius VII appointed him Vicar General of the Order in 1814, and in the following year Master of the Sacred Palace, an office which A. retained until his death. In this capacity he indicated to Lamennais the corrections to be introduced into his Essai sur l'indifférence (1821–23).
He published several works. Among the principal ones deserving mention are: Difesa della Bolla «Auctorum fidei» (Rome, 1810); La ragione e la fede in collera con F(r). (Carrega) per la sua dissertazione sulla legge del divorzio (ibid., 1814); L'uomo politico-religioso (ibid., 1822); La vendita dei beni ecclesiastici (ibid., 1824).
