AMAMA, SIXTINUS. – Dutch Reformed theologian, b. in 1593, d. in 1629. He was a profound scholar of the Hebrew language, on which he published two grammars and a dictionary. Hostile to Catholicism, he attacked the official edition of the Vulgate in his Dissertatiuncula (Franeker 1618), in the Censura Vulgatae (there 1620), and in the Antibarbarus biblicus (Amsterdam 1628), enlarged in 1656, in which he claimed to correct all the errors of Catholics concerning Sacred Scripture.
