AMALTEO, POMPONIO. - Painter, born in Motta di Livenza in 1505, died on March 9, 1588 in S. Vito al Tagliamento. Throughout his production he remained constantly faithful to Pordenone, whose daughter he had married, often going so far as to imitate him, as in the Duomo (Chapel of St. Nicholas, 1533) and in the church of the hospital of S. Vito (Life of the Virgin, 1535); but lacking the fervent genius of his father-in-law, he weakened his forms, darkened his colors, and exaggerated his movement. He was nonetheless a good composer and had facility of execution, which in his later period degenerated into mannerism. Among his best works are the frescoes of the Duomo and of the Castles of Belluno and Udine, the Life of the Virgin in S. Maria della Grazie at Prodlone of 1538, and the Stories of St. Catherine in the church of the same name in Tolmezzo; many others remain in various localities of Friuli.
