ALTICHIERO da ZEVIO. - Painter, born at Zevio near Verona in 1320, died, perhaps at Verona, after 1390. After having worked, it seems, in Verona in the palace of the Scaligeri, he carried out his principal activity at Padua; nevertheless, among the paintings of the chapel of S. Felice and of the Oratory of S. Giorgio in the basilica of the Santo at Padua, only part of the frescoes in the former can be reliably attributed to him, as well as the famous Crucifixion among those in the latter, where, for the rest, one is rather inclined to see the hand of his collaborator Avanzo. Indeed, it lacks that refined elegance of Gothic-Sienese derivation which characterizes all his works, from the tomb of Dotto (1370) to the tomb of F. Cavallo at Verona (c. 1390).
