ALTICHIERO da ZEVIO. - Painter b. at Zevio near Verona in 1320, d., perhaps at Verona, after 1390. After having worked, it seems, in Verona in the palace of the Scaligeri, he carried on his major activity at Padua; however, among the paintings of the chapel of St. Felix and of the Oratory of St. George in the basilica of the Santo at Padua, only part of the frescoes of the former is attributed to him with good reason, and the famous Crucifixion among those of the latter, where, on account of the subject matter, there is rather a disposition to see the hand of his collaborator Avanzo. Indeed, there is lacking in it that refined elegance of Gothic-Sienese derivation that characterizes all his works, from the tomb of Dotto (1370) to the tomb of F. Cavallo at Verona (c. 1390).
