ALLEGRI, POMPONIO. - Painter, son of Antonio (v. CORREGGIO), b. at Correggio on 3 Sept. 1522, d. probably at Parma after 1595. His artistic training is uncertain. Although of no great ability, perhaps availing himself of his father's name, which he sought to imitate, he acquired great fame both in his native town and in Parma, where he carried out most of his activity. At Correggio he decorated a chapel in the Cathedral and executed a fresco for that of the Corpus Domini in S. Quirico (whitewashed in 1730). Other works are at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Modena (St. John the Baptist), at S. Francesco al Prato in Parma (Baptism), at S. Maria in Borgo Taschini (Virgin with Child).
