ALLEGRI, POMPONIO

ALLEGRI, POMPONIO. — Painter, son of Antonio (v. ACCORSO DA REGGIO), born in Correggio on 3 Sept. 1522, probably in Parma after 1595. His artistic training remains uncertain. Though not of great talent, he may have exploited the renown of his father, whom he sought to emulate, and thus gained considerable fame both in his native town and in Parma, where he largely carried out his work. In Correggio he decorated a chapel in the Cathedral and painted a fresco for that of the Corpus Domini in S. Quirico (whitewashed in 1730). Other works are at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Modena (St John the Baptist), at S. Fiamengo, in Prato and Parma (Baptism), and at S. Maria in Borgo Tascini (Virgin and Child).
