ALLEGRI, POMPONIO

ALLEGRI, POMPONIO. – Painter, son of Antonio (v. ACCORSO DA REGGIO), born in Correggio on 3 September 1522, died probably in Parma after 1595. His artistic training is uncertain. Although not endowed with great ability, perhaps making use of his father’s name, whom he sought to imitate, he acquired considerable fame both in his native town and in Parma, where he carried out most of his activity. In Correggio he decorated a chapel in the Cathedral and executed a fresco for the chapel of Corpus Domini in S. Quirico (whitewashed in 1730). Other works are in the Accademia di Belle Arti in Modena (S. Giovanni Battista), in S. Francesco al Prato in Parma (Battesimo), and in S. Maria in Borgo Taschini (Vergine con Figlio).
