ANDRADA DE PAYYA, DIOGO. - Illustrious Portuguese theologian, b. at Coimbra in 1528, d. in 1575 at Lisbon. He taught at the University of his native city. In 1561 he was sent by King Sebastian of Portugal, as his theologian, to the Council of Trent.

He published seven volumes of sermons in Portuguese, not entirely beyond censure, because, among other things, the author admits the salvation of the ancient philosophers, by virtue of a vague knowledge of the Redeemer, and furthermore a book: De Conciliorum auctoritate. But what made him most famous was the activity he carried on against the Protestants and especially against Martin Chemnitz, in two works: Orthodoxarum explicationum libri decem (Venice 1564), and Defensio Tridentinae Fidei Catholicae (Lisbon 1578).
