ANFOSSI, MICHELE ANTONIO di SAN LUIGI GONZAGA. - Discalced Carmelite, missionary and bishop, b. at San Remo on 31 Oct. 1799. He took the religious habit in Rome, where he made his profession on 27 Sept. 1816. Sent (1825) to the missions in the kingdom of the Great Mogul (East Indies), he exercised the ministry for nine years in the stations of Surat, Baroda, Kaira (in Gujarat); then he was vicar of the church of Hope in Bombay (1835-1852), and vicar general of that bishop. Appointed in 1853 first vicar apostolic of Mangalore, he displayed extraordinary activity there, building churches and schools, and communicating his zeal to the missionaries. He resigned the office in 1870 and retired to Quilon, where he died on 22 Dec. 1878.
