ANFOSSI, MICHELE ANTONIO di SAN LUIGI GONZAGA. - Discalced Carmelite, missionary, and bishop, b. at San Remo on 31 Oct. 1799. He took the religious habit in Rome, where he made his profession on 27 Sept. 1816. Sent (1825) to the missions in the kingdom of the Great Mogul (East Indies), he exercised the ministry for nine years at the stations of Surat, Baroda, Kaira (in Gugerrat); he was then vicar of the church of the Speranza at Bombay (1835–1852), and vicar general of that bishop. Appointed in 1853 first apostolic vicar of Mangalore, he displayed extraordinary activity there, building churches and schools and imparting his zeal to the missionaries. He resigned the office in 1870 and retired to Quilon, where he died on 22 Dec. 1878.
