ANNE OF SAINT BARTHOLOMEW, Blessed. - Discalced Carmelite, in the world Anna García, b. Oct. 1, 1549 in Almendral (near Ávila), d. at Antwerp on June 7, 1626. She entered on Nov. 2, 1570, first as a lay sister, the first reformed monastery of Ávila, and St. Teresa, appreciating her qualities and gifts both natural and supernatural, took her as an inseparable companion on her journeys and wished to die in her arms. A. was among the first discalced Carmelites who went to France (1604), where she founded two monasteries, at Pontoise (1605) with Anne of Jesus and at Tours (1608). She then passed into Belgium, where she founded the monastery of Antwerp (Nov. 6, 1612) and, through her prayers, saved the city from the danger of falling into the hands of the Huguenots (1622, 1624); for which fact she was acclaimed by the people "Liberatrix of Antwerp." Upon her death countless graces and miracles followed; she was beatified by Benedict XV on May 6, 1917; her feast is celebrated on June 7.
