Anna of Saint Augustine, Venerable

ANNA di SANT'AGOSTINO, venerable. — A Discalced Carmelite, disciple of s. Teresa, born at Dueña (Palencia) in 1555, died at Villanueva on 11 December 1624. She took the Carmelite habit at Málaga in 1575. She accompanied s. Teresa in the foundation of the monastery of Villanueva della Jara, of which she was prior on several occasions. In 1600 she founded a monastery at Valera de Abajo (Cuenca). She distinguished herself through an abundance of supernatural charisms. Pius VI declared her virtues heroic in 1776. In obedience, she wrote her autobiography, an important document of mystical life.
