BOMBAY, ARCHDIOCESE OF. — The apostolic vicariate of Bombay traces its origins to that known as the Great Mogul, entrusted in 1696 to the Discalced Carmelites, whose see was transferred to Bombay in 1720. From it was detached (1784) the Capuchin mission of Hindostan.
On 8 March 1854 it was divided into two vicariates: the northern, or Bombay, entrusted to the Jesuits following the Carmelites’ renunciation; and the southern, or Poona, given to the Capuchins, who were succeeded by the Jesuits in 1858.
