MESSENGER OF THE SACRED HEART. - Monthly periodical for the spread of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Apostleship of Prayer, founded in Parma in 1864 by the Barnabite Fr. A. Maresca, in imitation of the Messager du Sacré Coeur, begun at Vals by the Jesuit H. Ramière in 1861.

The first two years were a translation of the French periodical of the same name; subsequently the periodical became independent. In 1916 it moved directly to Rome under the direction of the Jesuits Aloisi Masella and G. Venturini.
The publication continues to this day and regularly contains commentary on the “monthly intentions,” including the missionary ones, approved by the Pope and proposed to members of the Apostleship of Prayer, meditations for the monthly retreat, biographies of saints and particularly worthy persons, conversions, and a review of the interests of the Apostleship of Prayer.
