ALOISI-MASELLA, GAETANO. - Cardinal, born at Pontecorvo on 30 Sept. 1826, died at Rome on 22 Nov. 1902. Having entered the pontifical diplomatic service, he was secretary and auditor of the nunciature at Naples, then auditor at Munich and at Paris; in 1877 he was appointed nuncio in Bavaria, and as such had a memorable meeting with Bismarck to dissuade him from the Kulturkampf. From 1879 to 1883 he was nuncio at Lisbon, and there he energetically defended the rights of the Church in the appointment of bishops. In 1887 he was elevated to the cardinalate, and subsequently was prefect of various Congregations, among them that of the Rites for almost ten years. As pro-datary he carried out the important reforms desired by Leo XIII.
