ALEGAMBE, PHILIPPE. — Born in Brussels on 22 January 1592, died in Rome on 6 September 1652. After completing his studies, he went to Spain, then to Sicily as a page to the viceroy, Duke of Ossuna. There, in 1613, he became a Jesuit; he was professor of philosophy and theology at Gratz; then he accompanied throughout Europe the young Prince of Eggenberg, whose tutor he was, and spent the final years of his life in Rome.
He compiled a Bibliotheca of Jesuit writers from 1608 to 1642, as a continuation of Ribadeneira’s catalogue, published at Antwerp in 1643; Mortes illustres et gesta of Jesuits who died for the faith, etc. (Rome 1657); Heroes et Victimae charitatis Soc. Iesu, that is, a catalogue of Jesuits who died while serving plague victims (Rome 1658). The last two works were completed by his confrere Giovanni Nădăsi.
