MICHELE, SINCELLO. - Born in Jerusalem ca. 761, died there on 4 January 846. Venerated as a saint by the Greeks on 18 December. An esychast monk of the Laura of St Sabbas in Jerusalem, he was the teacher of the famous brothers Theodore and Theophanes Graptoi. Together with them and the monk Job he took part in the controversies over the *Filioque* with the Benedictine monks of the Holy City, and would have come to Rome to resolve the issue had he not been detained in Constantinople because of the disturbances of the iconoclastic struggle. He restored the monastery of Chora in the capital and was appointed *syncellus* by his friend St Methodius. He maintained a correspondence with St Theodore the Studite; he wrote in the *Libellus de fide orthodoxa* (ed. by B. de Montfaucon, in *Biblioth. coisliniana*, Paris 1715, pp. 90 ff.) and *Δόγος συνταξειος*, as well as panegyrics, discourses and poems; however, it is difficult to establish their authenticity.
