MAURIZIO di SANTA TERESA. - In the world Antonio Baistrocchi, Discalced Carmelite, missionary, b. at Parma on 19 Aug. 1662, d. on 15 May 1726 at Surat (India). Ordained priest, he served for some time as prior of the convent of Mantova.
Sent in 1704 to the mission of the Great Mogul (India), he was elected, on 12 May 1708, apostolic vicar of the same, with the title of bishop of Anastasiopolis. He resided in the house of the Capuchins at Surat (province of Guzurat) until 1712, when he moved to the new station of Karwar (or Sunkery), in Canara. In 1718 he introduced the Carmelites to the island of Bombay, where, from 1720, he and his missionaries assumed parochial care in 5 churches. He had much to suffer at the hands of the Portuguese, the bishop of Goa, and his priests, but with great prudence he was able to withstand all their claims.
