MAURICE OF SAINT TERESA. - In the world Antonio Baistrocchi, Discalced Carmelite, missionary, b. at Parma on 19 Aug. 1662, d. on 15 May 1726 at Surat (India). Ordained a priest, for some time he governed the convent of Mantua as prior.

Sent in 1704 to the mission of the Great Mogul (India), he was, on 12 May 1708, elected vicar apostolic of the same with the title of bishop of Anastasiopolis. He resided in the house of the Capuchins of Surat (province of Guzurat) until 1712, when he moved to the new station of Karwar (or Sunkery), in Canara. In 1718 he introduced the Carmelites to the island of Bombay, where, from 1720, he and his missionaries took on the parochial care of 5 churches. He had much to suffer at the hands of the Portuguese, of the bishop of Goa and of his priests, but with great prudence he knew how to stand up to all their claims.
