MARY OF JESUS, Venerable. - Discalced Carmelite, in the world Maria Lopez de Rivas, b. 18 Aug. 1560 in Tartanedo (Guadalajara, Spain), d. in Toledo on 13 Sept. 1640 in the odor of sanctity. She received the habit of the daughters of St. Teresa in Toledo, where she was (from 1583 onward) six times mistress of novices and three times prioress. She had a profound knowledge of the meaning of Sacred Scripture, heavenly visions, the gift of prophecy and that of discerning hearts. The cause of her beatification was introduced in 1926 (AAS, 19 [1927], pp. 102-105).
