MARIA degli ANGELI, blessed. - In the world Marianna Fontanella, born on 7 Jan. 1661 in Torino, where she became a Discalced Carmelite in the monastery of S. Cristina (1676), and where she died on 16 Dec. 1717. After painful and prolonged spiritual struggles, she was endowed with the gifts of miracles, prophecy, visions, etc. The deliverance of the city of Torino from the siege of 1706 was attributed to her intercession. She was beatified by Pio IX on 25 Apr. 1865. Her feast is celebrated in the Carmelite Order on 16 Dec.
