MAURIZIO da PORTO (Mauritius de Portu, Hibernicus). - Philosopher and theologian, in the world M. O'Fihely, b. c. 1460 in Ireland (uncertain whether at Baltimora or Clonfert), d. in 1513 at Galway. He studied at Oxford and entered the Order of Friars Minor. Regent of the Studium generale of Milan from 1488, in 1491 he was assigned to the University of Padua, where he was still teaching theology in 1500. In 1506 he was consecrated archbishop of Tuam and in that capacity took part in the Fifth Lateran Council.
His thought developed in the wake of Duns Scoto, some of whose works he published and commented upon. In a brief Enchyridion fidei (Venice 1509) he set forth schematically his thought concerning the contingency of things, divine foreknowledge, free will, and predestination.
