BOMOLOGNO DA BOLOGNA. - Dominican philosopher and theologian, b. in Bologna at the beginning of the 13th century, d. there ca. 1280. He became a religious and completed his studies in Bologna. Probably a sentence commentator in Paris (1266-68), for several years he taught in Bologna where he was also regent of the Studium from 1277 to 1279.
The fruit of his teaching were a commentary on the Sentences and various works of logic: such as the commentaries on Porphyry, on Aristotle's Categories, on the Peri hermeneias and on the Book of the Six Principles of Gilbert de la Porrée. The only work that has come down to us is the Commentary on the Sentences (of which, however, book II is missing). It is preserved in Bologna (books I and III, University Library, codd. 1506, 1508; book IV, Archiginnasio Library, cod. B 1420) and in Assisi (only book III, Municipal Library 155). B.'s method is that used by the other authors of similar works. His main sources are St. Thomas, Peter of Tarentaise, St. Bonaventure and Annibaldo degli Annibaldi. He has a great familiarity with the works of Aristotle and with Arabic philosophy, which he shows he knows much more than his sources do.
