BERTANO, PIETRO. - Bishop and cardinal, b. at Nonantola (Modena) on 4 Nov. 1501, d. at Rome on 8 March 1558. A valued diplomat and a capable theologian. A Dominican at Modena in 1516; he studied at Bologna, where he took his degree. Held in high esteem by Paul III, he was called to Rome in 1534. In 1536, at the Pope's behest, he handled a delicate affair with the Duke of Urbino; he was theologian to Cardinal Ercole Gonzaga, who on 28 Nov. 1537 ceded in his favor the bishopric of Fano, which he held in commendam. From Feb. 1546 to March 1547 he took part in the Council of Trent, where he distinguished himself by his profound theological learning and pastoral zeal. Sent as nuncio to Charles V in June 1548, in 1551 he carried out delicate assignments with great success. Julius III created him cardinal priest of the title of Sts. Marcellinus and Peter on 20 Nov. 1551. He was buried at St. Sabina. His works remain in manuscript: Commentaria in universum s. Thomae Summam, and Tractatus de potestate papae contra Lutherum.
