BERTARIO. – Chronicler, priest of Verdun and canon of S. Vanne (ca. 917).
At the request of his bishop Dadone, he wrote the Gesta episcoporum Viridunensium (332–887) in order to gather information about those bishops, since all the documents in the episcopal archive had been destroyed in the fire of the cathedral (916). A most important chronicle for the documents it cites, written in a simple and unadorned style. It may be read in MGH, Script., IV, pp. 36–45, reproduced in PL, 132, 501–16.
