Bertarius

BERTARIO

BERTARIUS. - Chronicler, priest of Verdun and canon of St. Vanne (c. 917).

He wrote, at the commission of his bishop Dado, the Gesta episcoporum Viridunensium (332-887) in order to gather records of those bishops, since all the documents of the episcopal archive had been destroyed in the fire of the cathedral (916). A most important chronicle for the documents it cites, written in a simple style and without ornament. It can be read in MGH, Script., IV, pp. 36-45, reproduced in PL, 132, 501-16.
