BERNARDUS, LOMBARDI. - Fourteenth-century French Thomist, Dominican of the convent of Perpignan; he was prior of Avignon (1323), then provincial of his province of Provence (1323–27). He commented on the Sentences in Paris in the years 1327–28. As early as 1325 King Robert of Anjou of Naples had sent a supplication to the Pontiff asking that he might deign to promote him master in theology by extraordinary procedure. But John XXII replied that the ordinary course of promotions should be followed. Thus he received the mastership only between 1331 and 1332.
He wrote a Commentary on the Sentences (Munich, Staatsbibl. cod. lat. 13501; Leipzig, university library, ms. 542; Milan, Ambrosian Library H 44 inf.), which is among the best of the period for the clarity and depth of its doctrine. In some questions, however, a certain influence of Durando da St-Pourçain may be noted. He also wrote quodlibetal questions.
