BERNARDUS, LOMBARDI. - French Thomist of the 14th century, a Dominican in the convent of Perpignan, he was prior of Avignon (1323), then provincial of his province of Provence (1323-27). He commented on the Sentences in Paris in the years 1327-28. Already in 1325 the king of Naples, Robert of Anjou, had sent a petition to the Pontiff that he might deign to promote him master in theology by extraordinary means. But John XXII replied that the ordinary way of promotions should be followed. Thus he received the mastership only between 1331 and 1332.

He wrote a Commentary on the Sentences (Munich Staatsbibl. cod. lat. 13501, Leipzig university library ms. 542, Milan, Ambrosian library H 44 inf.), which is one of the best of the period for the clarity and depth of its doctrine. In some questions, however, a certain influence of Durandus of St-Pourçain is noticeable. He also wrote quodlibetal questions.
