ANKING, ARCHDIOCESE OF. – It is located in China, in the western part of the civil province of Anhwei; it was created as an apostolic vicariate on 21 February 1929, by division from the apostolic vicariate of Wuhu, which had encompassed the entire said province, and is entrusted to the Society of Jesus, which evangelizes it through Spanish fathers.

On 11 April 1946 it was elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese with two suffragan dioceses: Pengpu and Wuhu. As of 30 June 1940 there were 36 priests, 15 brothers, and 13 sisters. There were 26,898 Catholics and 13,416 catechumens, out of a total population of approximately 7,000,000 inhabitants, mostly engaged in rice cultivation. The cult of ancestors is quite lively there.
