Also known as: B.W.I.

BRITISH WEST INDIES. - The name West Indies designates the archipelagos of Central America known as the Greater and Lesser Antilles. This name dates back to the time of Christopher Columbus, and today under the same name are included independent states and French colonies known as the French Antilles, British and Dutch colonies. The latter two are still today called B. W. I. and Dutch West Indies, rather than Antilles.

For the history and ecclesiastical organization it is necessary to consult the individual entries, such as, for example: Antilles, Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Dominicana, Guiana.

The B. W. I. are composed of six groups, five of which are in Central America: Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica and dependencies, Leeward Islands and Windward Islands, among which Antigua. Ecclesiastically they belong to various circumscriptions, of which the apostolic vicariates of Bahamas (v.) and Jamaica (v.), the diocese of Roseau (v.) and the archdiocese of Port of Spain depend on Propaganda.
