ARMIDALE, DIOCESI DI

ARMIDALE, Diocese of. - In southern Australia, erected on 28 Nov. 1862, by the splitting off of the archdiocese of Sydney. The area of the territory is 72,400 sq. km. and the total population about 120,000 inhabitants, of whom 23,000 are Catholics; parishes, churches and chapels 84. Pastoral care is entrusted to 40 secular priests assisted by 19 brothers (Brothers of the Christian Schools and Christian Brothers) and 220 sisters. Elementary schools 32, with 3004 pupils; secondary schools 11, with 779 pupils, and two teachers' colleges. Charitable and cultural associations and groups of Catholic Action, especially youth groups and also rural ones (among which the paper Rural Life is widespread), contribute to the spiritual and material progress of the diocese.
