ARMIDALE, DIOCESE of. – In southern Australia, erected on 28 November 1862 by division of the archdiocese of Sydney. The territory covers an area of 72,400 sq. km, and the total population is approximately 120,000, of whom 23,000 are Catholics; there are 84 parishes, churches, and chapels. Pastoral care is entrusted to 40 secular priests, assisted by 19 brothers (Brothers of the Christian Schools and Christian Brothers) and 220 nuns. There are 32 elementary schools, with 3,004 pupils; 11 secondary schools, with 779 pupils; and two teacher-training schools. Charitable and cultural associations and Catholic Action groups, especially youth and rural groups (among which the publication Rural Life is widely circulated), contribute to the spiritual and material progress of the diocese.
