SYDNEY, Archdiocese of. - It is located on the eastern coast of the State of New South Wales in Australia (v.).

After the first developments of the missionary work, on June 3, 1834 the apostolic vicariate of New Holland and Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) was erected, detached from the apostolic vicariate of the Mauritius Islands. On Apr. 5, 1842 it was divided into the three apostolic vicariates of S., Hobart and Adelaide. Shortly after, on Apr. 12 of the same year, the apostolic vicariate of S. was elevated to an archdiocese with the suffragan dioceses of Adelaide and Hobart, which corresponded respectively to the three colonies of that time, that is, Western Australia, South Australia and Van Diemen's Land, now Tasmania. On May 6, 1845 the diocese of Perth (v.) was detached from it; on June 25, 1847 the boundaries with the diocese of Adelaide were modified; on Apr. 12, 1859 the diocese of Brisbane (v.) was detached; on Nov. 28, 1862 the dioceses of Goulburn, Wagga-Wagga (v.) and Armidale (v.) were detached; on May 10, 1887 the dioceses of Wicannia Forbes (v.) and of Grafton, now Lismore, were detached. On Nov. 15, 1951 a long coastal strip was detached which, together with another taken from the archdiocese of Canberra-Goulburn, formed the new diocese of Wollongong. The archdiocese of S. is perfectly organized. The major seminary of Manly, inaugurated in 1888, was built by Card. Patrick F. Moran for all of Australia. It is now about to have the Faculty of theology. The minor seminary is at Springwood and dates back to 1912.

It has an area of 29,440 sq. km. with 414,910 Catholics out of a population exceeding 1,885,818. There are: 172 parishes, 237 churches, 325 diocesan priests, 270 religious, 495 brothers, 2449 sisters; 12 ecclesiastical colleges, 2 university colleges, besides numerous other schools and a good number of charitable works. - See plate CXVIII.
