WOLLONGONG, DIOCESI DI

WOLLONGONG, Diocese of. - It is located in the State of New South Wales in Australia.

It was erected on 15 Nov. 1951 with territory detached from the archdioceses of Sydney and of Canberra-Goulburn, with which it borders, as well as with the Pacific Ocean. It has an area of 4500 square miles and a population of about 150,000 people, of whom 20,000 are Catholics served by 26 priests. There are also the Fathers of the Most Blessed Sacrament, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, the Franciscan Fathers, the Christian Brothers and other female societies. Twenty parishes have already been organized.
