Wollongong, Diocese of

WOLLONGONG, DIOCESE of. — It is situated in the State of New South Wales in Australia.

It was erected on 15 November 1951 from territory detached from the archdioceses of Sydney and Camberra-Goulburn, with which it borders, as well as with the Pacific Ocean. It has an area of 4,500 square miles and a population of approximately 150,000, of whom 20,000 are Catholics assisted by 26 priests. There are also the Fathers of the Most Blessed Sacrament, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, the Franciscan Fathers, the Christian Brothers, and other women’s societies. Twenty parishes have already been organized.
