CANBERRA-GOULBURN, ARCHDIOCESE of. - In Australia, until 1948, the archdiocese of C. G. was simply a diocese with its seat at Goulburn. It was erected on 28 Nov. 1863 from territory detached from the archdiocese of Sydney and constituted a suffragan of the same. On 10 May 1887 it underwent a rectification of its boundaries, and in 1917 the diocese of Wagga-Wagga was erected from part of its territory, while twelve parishes detached from the archdiocese of Sydney were assigned to II.
In 1948 the diocese was raised to the dignity of an immediately subject archdiocese, with its seat at Canberra, the federal capital, and bearing the title of C.-G.
Its territory extends over 58,511 sq. km., with a Catholic population of 39,050 souls. Parishes 56, churches 147, diocesan priests 87, religious 19, brothers 33, sisters 421. In primary schools 6,140 pupils are educated, and 1,550 in secondary schools. There are 4 hospitals and various other charitable institutions (1948).
