BABOCCIO, ANTONIO, da PIPERNO. - Sculptor, b. in 1351, d. in 1435. In Naples, where he mainly carried out his activity, there are preserved the Tomb of Agnes and Clement of Anjou, in the church of S. Chiara (c. 1381), the main door of the Cathedral (1407), the Portal of S. Giovanni dei Pappacoda (1415), the Tomb of Ludovico Aldomoresco in S. Lorenzo Maggiore (1421), the sepulchral Monument of Onofrio Perna in S. Chiara (1423). In the cathedral of Salerno the funeral Monument of Queen Margaret of Durazzo (1412) has been transferred.

B.'s manner derives from the taste spread in Naples by Tino di Camaino (v.), and expresses itself through a crude realism of forms weighed down by provincial pomp.
