BABOCCIO, ANTONIO, da PIPERNO. - Sculptor, born in 1351, died in 1435. In Naples, where he chiefly pursued his activity, there survive the Tomb of Agnese and Clemente d'Angiò, in the church of S. Chiara (c. 1381), the main door of the Duomo (1407), the Portal of S. Giovanni dei Pappacoda (1415), the Tomb of Ludovico Aldomoresco in S. Lorenzo Maggiore (1421), and the Sepulchral Monument of Onofrio Perna in S. Chiara (1423). The Funerary Monument of Queen Margherita di Durazzo (1412) has been transferred to the cathedral of Salerno.
B.'s manner derives from the taste disseminated Tino di Camaino (v.), and is expressed through a coarse realism of forms weighed down by provincial ostentation.
