HUGO BALL. — German writer, b. 22 Feb. 1866 at Pirmasens, d. 14 Sept. 1927 at S. Abbondio near Lugano. He was one of the founders of Dadaism, but the experience of the First World War led him back into the bosom of the Catholic Church. In 1919 he published in Bern the work Zur Kritik der deutschen Intelligenz, of anti-Protestant tone. In 1923 the volume Byzantinisches Christentum bears witness to his definitive conversion. He was a contributor to the journal Hochland.
