BALLAINI, GIOVANNI. - Conventual theologian, b. in Andria (Apulia) in the first half of the 16th century, d. toward the end of the same century. He was a careful editor of the great Franciscan scholastics.

Master of Sacred Theology and regent of studies in Venice, he devoted himself to the revision of St. Bonaventure's Commentaries on the 4 books of the Sentences (Venice 1573) and of the Summa Theologiae of Alexander of Hales (ibid. 1576). He had already published biblical writings of John Wild (ibid. 1568) and philosophical writings of Pietro Tataret (ibid. 1571). In 1574-78 he returned to St. Bonaventure, publishing his Expositio in librum Sapientiae and the Compendium Theologiae, falsely attributed to him. Some of his editions were held in great esteem. The edition of the Bonaventuran Commentaries was reprinted by Rocca in 1580 and in the Vatican edition of Pope Sixtus V in 1588 ff.
