TARTARET (TATARET), PIERRE. - Celebrated Scotist and secular theologian (perhaps a Franciscan tertiary), at the University of Paris, of which he was rector in 1490.
An interpreter of the thought of Duns Scoto, he opposed Ockhamist nominalism and exercised broad influence on later Scotists. He supported the new mechanical theory of impetus in the debated question of the motion of projectiles. The following writings by him survive: Commentationes in libros totius Logicae Aristotelis (in which the figure of the «pons asinorum» appeared for the first time; [Freiburg 1494, Paris 1491 and repeatedly thereafter]); Expositio in Summulas Petri Hispani (Freiburg 1494, Paris 1501, enlarged from 1503 onward; reprinted in Basel 1514); Expos. in libros Logicae Porphyrii et Aristotelis... nec non in totam philosophiam naturalem et Metaphys. Arist. (Venice 1503); the same together with the Expos. in sex priores Arist. II. Moralium (1520 and repeatedly thereafter); Comment. in Quodlibeta Scoti (Paris 1519); Comm. in omnes 4 ll. Sentent. (Venice 1583, Naples 1607). His philosophical works were collected in Venice in 1623.
