TARTARET (TATARET), PIERRE. - Celebrated Scotist and secular theologian (perhaps a Franciscantertiary), at the University of Paris, of which he was rector in 1490.
An interpreter of the thought of Duns Scotus, he fought Occamist nominalism and exercised wide influence on later Scotists. He was a supporter of the new mechanical theory of impetus in the debated question of the motion of projectiles. The following writings of his survive: Commentationes in libros totius Logicae Aristotelis (where the figure of the "pons asinorum" appeared for the first time; [Freiburg 1494, Paris 1491 and several times thereafter]); Expositio in Summulas Petri Hispani (Freiburg 1494, Paris 1501, enlarged from 1503 onward; reprinted at Basel 1514); Expos. in libros Logicae Porphyrii et Aristotelis... nec non in totam philosophiam naturalem et Metaphys. Arist. (Venice 1503); the same together with the Expos. in sex priores Arist. II. Moralium (1520 and several times thereafter); Comment. in Quodlibeta Scoti (Paris 1519); Comm. in omnes 4 ll. Sentent. (Venice 1583, Naples 1607). The philosophical works were collected at Venice in 1623.
