TARTARET (TATARET), Pierre. — A celebrated Scotist and secular theologian (perhaps a Franciscan tertiary) at the University of Paris, of which he was rector in 1490.
An interpreter of the thought of Duns Scotus, he opposed Ockhamist nominalism and exercised a wide influence on later Scotists. He supported the new mechanical theory of impetus in the debated question of the motion of projectiles. His surviving works include: *Commentationes in libros totius Logicae Aristotelis* (where the figure of the *asinorum* first appears); [Freiburg 1494, Paris 1491 and frequently thereafter]; *Expositio in Summulas Petri Hispani* (Freiburg 1494, Paris 1501, expanded from 1503 onward; reprinted in Basel 1514); *Expositio in libros Logicae Porphyrii et Aristotelis... nec non in totam philosophiam naturalem et Metaphys. Arist.* (Venice 1503); the same together with *Expositio in sex priores Aristotelis libros Moralium* (1520 and more frequently thereafter); *Commentaria in Quodlibeta Scoti* (Paris 1519); *Commentaria in omnes 4 libros Sententiarum* (Venice 1583, Naples 1607). His philosophical works were collected in Venice in 1623.
