SIGER OF COURTRAI. - Master in the Faculty of Arts at Paris in 1309; then doctor of theology in 1315 and procurator of the Sorbonne; d. May 30, 1341, leaving as a legacy to the Sorbonne eight volumes that contained writings of St. Thomas.

His name is linked to certain little treatises of formal logic, Ars Priorum, Summa modorum significandi and a series of Fallaciae and Sophismata, subjects on which the wits of the young men preparing to face the study of natural philosophy were sharpened. This investigation of the "modi significandi," widely diffused at the beginning of the 14th century, tended to discover the logical structure common to the grammars proper to every language; but it was discredited by the rise of the new Ockhamist logic.
