BARRANQUILLA, DIOCESE of. — In the western part of the Republic of Colombia, department of Atlántico, suffragan of Cartagena. The episcopal see is in B., capital of the department, situated on the navigable estuary of the Magdalena River. It is the most populous city in Colombia after the capital. Established by Pius XI on 7 July 1932, the diocese has a territorial area of 3,470 sq km and a population of 330,100 inhabitants, of whom 327,428 are Catholics. The number of parishes is 17, with 14 priests of the secular clergy and 36 religious priests (1949).
