ANTIOQUIA, Diocese of. - The department of A., which is the most populous in the Republic of Colombia, comprises the mountainous region facing the Gulf of Darién.
The diocese, which is a suffragan of Medellín, the departmental capital, has a territorial extent of 2,100 sq. km., with a population of 184,821 inhabitants, almost all of whom are Catholic. It is divided into 21 parishes, served by 45 secular priests.
It was erected by Pius VII on 31 August 1804; on 5 February 1917 it was united with the Diocese of Jericó, from which it was separated on 3 July 1941.
