ANTIOQUIA, DIOCESI di. — The department of A., which is the most populous in the Republic of Colombia, comprises the mountainous region overlooking the Gulf of Darien.
The diocese, which is suffragan to Medellín, the capital of the department, has a territorial extent of 2,100 sq. km, with a population of 184,821 inhabitants, almost all Catholics. It is divided into 21 parishes, served by 45 priests of the secular clergy.
It was erected by Pius VII on 31 August 1804; on 5 February 1917 it was united with the diocese of Jericó, from which it was separated on 3 July 1941.
