ANTIOCHUS, Bishop of Ptolemais (Phoenicia). - A celebrated orator, called by some "Chrysostom." Having become a friend of Severian of Gabala and of other opponents of St. John Chrysostom, bishop of Constantinople, he was one of the most bitter accusers against him at the synod ad Quercum (403). After Chrysostom returned from his first exile, A. continued tenaciously in opposing him and was at the head of the delegation that asked and obtained his second exile from the emperor Arcadius (20 June 404). A. tried in vain to obtain the approval of Pope Innocent I. After the death of the Antiochene patriarch Flavian, A. consecrated Porphyry, notorious for his animosity against Chrysostom. He died no later than the beginning of 408.

Many contemporaries gave a very severe judgment regarding A. However, some work of his was cited with honor by the Council of Chalcedon (Mansi, VII, 469), by Theodoret (Eranistes, II: PG 83, 205), by St. Cyril of Alexandria (De recta fide ad reginas, I, 10: PG 76, 1213) and by Leontius of Byzantium (Rerum sacrarum, II: PG 86, 2044). This is all that remains of his works. Gennadius (De viris illustribus, 20) still records an Adversus avaritiam and a homily In curatione caesi, now lost.
