ALEXANDER, Saint, Bishop of Constantinople. - Consecrated bishop of Byzantium between 313 and 317, d. in 336. He was a defender of orthodoxy against the error of Arius. Compelled by Constantine to receive Arius into the Church when he still gave no signs of repentance, he asked with instant prayers for the judgment of God. On the very morning on which he was to go to church, Arius died suddenly in the latrine. A. was the first bishop of the new Constantinople. His feast is celebrated among the Latins on 28 Aug., among the Byzantines on the 31st.
