HADRIAN. - Greek exegete, author of an "Introduction to the Sacred Scriptures" that was already mentioned by Cassiodorus in the De institutione divinarum litterarum (I, ch. 10: PL 70, 1122) and praised by Photius (Biblioth., Cod. 2: PG 103, 45). From the context of the work, handed down to us in abbreviated form, we learn that the author was a monk and priest, a Syrian by birth although he writes in Greek, and a member of the exegetical school of Antioch. It seems that A. died between 440 and 450, and that he was in correspondence with Nilus (Epist., II, 60; III, 118, 266: PG 79, 225, 437, 516). The critical edition of the "Introduction" was edited by F. Gössling, Berlin 1887 (Cf. also PG 98, 1273-1312).

It appears that Cassiodorus knew a Latin translation of A. (cf. P. Courcelle, Les Lettres grecques en Occident, Paris 1943, p. 336, n. 3).
