ADRIAN van den EECKHOUTE. - Belgian Carmelite, d. at Ghent in 1498. Prior of the convent at Ghent in 1466, preacher and confessor at the court of Burgundy, he enjoyed an authority that enabled him to impose himself upon the murderers of Chancellor Hugonet in 1477. Under his leadership, the Carmelite house at Ghent became a literary center. Of his works, largely destroyed by the Protestants, there survive manuscript commentaries on Boethius and the Bible, as well as some sermons.
