JERICÓ, Diocese of. - Diocese and city in Colombia in South America.

It has an area of 3,261 sq km with 250,000 inhabitants, all Catholics; it has 20 parishes, with 79 diocesan priests, 1 seminary, 1 male religious community and 21 female ones (Annuario Pontificio, 1951).

The diocese was created by Pope Benedict XV on 29 January 1915, by dismemberment of the southern part of the diocese of Antioquia, as a suffragan of Medellin. On 5 February 1917 the same Pontiff, with the apostolic letter Quod catholicae religionis, united it "aeque principaliter" to the diocese of Antioquia. Then on 3 July 1941 Pope Pius XI, with the apostolic constitution Universi dominici gregis, again separated the two dioceses, dismembering from J. the three parishes of Anzà, Caicedo and Urrao.
