JERICÓ, Diocese of. — Diocese and city in Colombia, South America.
It has an area of 3,261 sq. km. with 250,000 inhabitants, all Catholic; it comprises 20 parishes, with 79 diocesan priests, a seminary, 1 male religious community and 21 female religious communities (Annuario Pontificio, 1951).
The diocese was erected by Pope Benedict XV on 29 January 1915, by separating the southern part of the Diocese of Antioquia, as a suffragan of Medellín. On 5 February 1917 the same Pontiff, with the apostolic letter Quod catholicae religionis, reunited it “aeque principaliter” to the Diocese of Antioquia. Then, on 3 July 1941, Pope Pius XI, with the apostolic constitution Universi dominici gregis, again separated the two dioceses, detaching from Jericó the three parishes of Anzà, Caicedo and Urrao.
