ANTIPAS, Saint, Martyr. - He suffered martyrdom at Pergamum, probably under Domitian, certainly at a date earlier than the Apocalypse of St. John, since the letter to the angel of Pergamum recalls his martyrdom: "Antipas testis meus fidelis, qui occisus est apud vos, ubi satanas habitat" (Rev. 2:13). It is not proven that he was a bishop. The Passio, a product of fantasy but ancient, describes his martyrdom, which took place inside a red-hot bronze bull (BHG, 138). The Greek Menologia and the Roman Martyrology assign his feast to April 11.
