ANTIPA, SANTO, MARTIRE

ANTIPAS, Saint, Martyr. — He suffered martyrdom at Pergamum, probably under Domitian, certainly before the Apocalypse of St. John, since the letter to the angel of Pergamum recalls his martyrdom: "Antipas meus testis fidelis, qui occisus est apud vos, ubi satanas habitat" (Apoc. 2:13). It is not proven that he was a bishop. The *Passio*, a fanciful but ancient composition, describes his martyrdom, which occurred inside a bronze bull heated to red-hot (BHG, 138). The Greek Menologia and the Roman Martyrology assign his feast to April 11.
