ANTIPA, saint, martyr. — He suffered martyrdom at Pergamum, probably under Domitian, certainly before the Apocalypse of s. Giovanni, since the letter to the angel of Pergamum recalls his martyrdom: « Antipas testis meus fidelis, qui occisus est apud vos, ubi satanas habitat » (Apoc. 2, 13). It has not been proved that he was a bishop. The Passio, a work of imagination but ancient, describes his martyrdom, which took place inside a heated bronze bull (BHG, 138). The Greek Menologia and the Roman Martyrology assign his feast to 11 April.
