BECKER Y GONZÁLEZ, JERÓNIMO. – Spanish historian and journalist, born in Salamanca in 1857 and died in Madrid on 25 March 1925. A serious and conscientious scholar, balanced and markedly royalist in his tendencies, he wrote extensively on the diplomatic history of Spain and was the author of acute studies concerning the history of Spanish America.
Among his numerous and most important writings, the following should be mentioned, among others: La tradición política española, Apuntes para una biblioteca española de políticos y tratadistas de filosofía política (Madrid 1896); Historia política y diplomática desde la independencia de los Estados Unidos hasta nuestros días (1776-1895) (there 1897); Relaciones diplomáticas entre la España y la Santa Sede durante el siglo XIX (there 1908); España e Inglaterra: sus relaciones políticas desde las paces de Utrecht (there 1907); a Historia de Marruecos (there 1905), to which must also be added the first complete edition of the works of Fray Pedro de Aguado, namely Historia de Santa Marta y nuevo Reino de Granada (there 1916-17) and Historia de Venezuela (there 1918-19).
