BECKER Y GONZÁLEZ, JERÓNIMO. - Spanish historian and journalist, b. in Salamanca in 1857 and d. in Madrid on 25 March 1925. A serious and conscientious scholar, balanced and with markedly royalist tendencies, he wrote extensively on the diplomatic history of Spain and was the author of acute research relating to the history of Spanish America.
Among his numerous and most important writings, mention should be made, among others, of La tradición política española, Apuntes para una biblioteca española de políticos y tratadistas de filosofía política (Madrid 1896); Historia política y diplomática desde la independencia de los Estados Unidos hasta nuestros días (1776-1895) (ibid. 1897); Relaciones diplomáticas entre la España y la Santa Sede durante el siglo XIX (ibid. 1908); España e Inglaterra: sus relaciones políticas desde las paces de Utrecht (ibid. 1907); a Historia de Marruecos (ibid. 1905), to which should also be added the first complete edition of the works of Friar Pedro de Aguado, namely the Historia de Santa Marta y nuevo Reino de Granada (ibid. 1916-17) and the Historia de Venezuela (ibid. 1918-19).
