BELTRÁN, DOMINGO. – Spanish Jesuit and sculptor, born in Vitoria around 1535, he trained as a sculptor and architect in Italy before entering the Society of Jesus at Alcalá on 21 April 1561 as a coadjutor brother. He made the large frontals (retablos) of the high altars of the churches of the Society in Madrid and Murcia, and had begun another at Alcalá when he died on 25 April 1590. He was especially esteemed as a sculptor of large, highly expressive crucifixes, among them the beautiful “Cristo de los doctrineros” of the Universidad de Alcalá.
