BELTRÁN, DOMINGO. - Spanish Jesuit and sculptor, b. at Vitoria ca. 1535, trained as a sculptor and architect in Italy, before entering the Society of Jesus on 21 April 1561 at Alcalá, as a coadjutor Brother. He made the great reredoses (retablos) of the high altars of the Society's churches in Madrid and Murcia, and had begun another at Alcalá when he died on 25 April 1590. He was especially esteemed as a sculptor of large, highly expressive crucifixes, among them the beautiful "Cristo de los doctrineros" of the Universidad de Alcalá.
