BELTRÁN, DOMINGO. - A Spanish Jesuit and sculptor, born in Vitoria ca. 1535, he trained as a sculptor and architect in Italy before entering the Society of Jesus as a lay brother on April 21, 1561, in Alcalá. He created the large altarpieces (retablos) for the main altars of the Jesuit churches in Madrid and Murcia and had begun another in Alcalá when he died on April 25, 1590. He was especially esteemed as a sculptor of highly expressive large crucifixes, among which is the fine "Cristo de los doctrineros" in the University of Alcalá.
