BESSARIONE. - A periodical of Oriental studies published in Rome from 1896 to 1923, founded by Monsignor, later Cardinal, Niccolò Marini (1843-1923). Drawing inspiration from pontifical documents, the B. set itself a twofold program: to make known to Western Catholics the history, the liturgical, dogmatic, artistic, etc. heritage of the Eastern Christianities, and to promote the union of the Churches. To better achieve this aim, a Greek edition of the publication was also devised, but the project was not followed through. From 1919 to Aug. 1922, the B. became the official organ of the new Pontifical Institute for Oriental Studies.
